Since 2018, we’ve helped homeowners across Southern California plan, design, and complete successful remodeling projects, on time and on budget.  This guide is based on our own experience and the pricing is accurate for a business like ours with low-overhead.  We do not maintain a large showroom, fleet of trucks, and a team of sales people.  Our pricing might be less than some contractors and more than others.  Do your due diligence before hiring any contractor.

Pricing Disclaimer:  Material costs are rapidly fluctuating and changing frequently right now so it you get an estimate for your remodeling project you will need to act quickly to lock in your pricing.  Depending on the size and scope of your project you could save yourself thousands of dollars.

These are the factors that can affect the price of a home remodeling project.

What Affects the Cost of Your Remodel?

Every remodeling project is different in size, scope and materials. Here are some of the biggest cost drivers:

    • Size and scope: Larger projects simply cost more than smaller ones.
    • Existing conditions: Older homes usually need updates to plumbing and electrical systems.
    • Material choices: From economical to luxury material costs vary widely.
    • Structural work: Moving load-bearing walls, and adding square footage, increase costs.
    • Permits and compliance: Local building codes and permit fees and requirements add time and cost.
    • Labor and craftsmanship: Higher quality labor produces better results, but at a higher cost.

While no two remodeling projects are going to be exactly the same it's still helpful to understand what factors will affect the final cost of your project.

Home Addition Costs

If your family is growing or you need more space then adding square footage to your home is usually a better option than selling and buying something else.  Home additions are a major investment, but also one of the best ways to increase property value and get the home you need.

  • Small bump-out or room addition: $60,000–$100,000
  • Second-story addition: $150,000–$250,000 (very involved project)
  • In-law suite or expanded master: $100,000–$200,000

Home additions require foundation work, roofing, siding, electrical, sometimes plumbing, and are much more involved.  See our full Home Addition Cost Guide for more insight.

ADU Construction Costs

Due to climbing real estate costs Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) are in high demand across Southern California. Costs depend on type and complexity:

  • Garage Conversion ADU: $100,000–$180,000
  • Detached Backyard ADU: $150,000–$300,000
  • Above-Garage ADU: $200,000–$400,000

Permitting, utility upgrades, and site prep are key cost factors.  If you have an old detached garage or shop that you are not using they make excellent candidates for an ADU conversion. View our ADU Pricing Guide for a full breakdown.

whole home remodeling costs

Whole-Home Remodeling

Remodeling an entire home in Santa Clarita typically ranges between $100–$300 per square foot.

  • For a 2,000 sq ft home, expect $200,000–$600,000 depending on scope and materials.
  • Projects that include layout changes, system upgrades, and luxury finishes land on the higher end.

If you've purchased an older, fixer upper home then you've got a lot of work ahead of you.  Working a knowledgeable and experienced contractor can help you cut costs where you can while still keeping the improvements that will make the most impact.

Fireplace Remodeling Costs

Fireplaces are a popular feature in older homes but their style and finishing often need updating. Typical costs:

  • Basic makeover (paint, new tile): $5,000–$7,500
  • Custom surround, mantle, or stonework: $8,000–$15,000

Stone veneer, custom mantles, or even conversion to gas are all popular upgrades for an older fireplace. Check out our Fireplace Remodel Pricing Page for ideas and estimates.
